Welcoming Interactive 2021 is going virtual! That means we’re inviting you to join us to take a deep dive into immigrant inclusion best practices, hear from peers across the country, and be inspired by keynote speakers john a. powell (lowercase intentional) and Dr. Gail Christopher on belonging and equity.

The Welcoming Interactive is open to all those who are seeking inspiration and practical strategies for creating a more welcoming, inclusive society.  Whether you’re an expert or new to the issue, if you are seeking inspiration and practical strategies for creating a more welcoming and inclusive society, the Welcoming Interactive invites you to join the growing movement of practitioners in local communities across the country, and to share best practices and connect with a network of peers.

The focus of this year’s series of sessions and plenaries will be on inclusion best practices, with applications in emergency management and preparedness, community building, and immigrant inclusion.

About the speakers

Dr. Gail Christopher is widely recognized for strategic social change. She is a former Senior Advisor and Vice President of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and former executive director of the Institute for Government Innovation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is known for her pioneering work to infuse holistic health and diversity concepts into public sector programs and policy discourse.

john a. powell (lowercase intentional) is director of the Othering & Belonging Institute at the University of California Berkeley. An internationally recognized expert in civil rights, civil liberties, structural racism, housing, poverty, and democracy, john is well-known for his work in developing the frameworks of targeted universalism, othering, and belonging. john currently holds the Robert D. Haas Chancellor’s Chair in Equity and Inclusion and is also a professor of law, African American studies, and ethnic studies at UC Berkeley.

The Welcoming Interactive is held annually to bring together nonprofit organizations, local governments, and community leaders. Local communities will receive resources, tools, access networking, and learn best practices to positively impact the lives of newcomers in hundreds of communities across the country and around the world.
